The Greenest Buildings – at the International Conference on Sustainable Construction

Studies of a selection of the most pioneering buildings in terms of sustainable construction practice were represented at the recent Sustainable Building 2000 conference (SB2000). On behalf of the DETR, BRE exhibited two UK case studies selected from a range of seven buildings representing some of the most innovative building designs in the UK.

The event, which took place in Maastricht in October last year, was among the largest ever gatherings of stakeholders in sustainable development. It combined two previous series of conferences into one: ‘CIB W-100 and the Environment’ and ‘Green Building Challenge’.

The CIB W-100 (previously CIB W TG8) is a group, which is investigating issues related to the implementation of building rating and labelling systems. The conferences they have previously held have been a focus for the dissemination of their findings. There are also presentations on relevant environmental sustainability and green building issues by international researchers and practitioners."

Green Building Challenge is an international collaborative initiative, which aims to develop an internationally accepted environmental assessment tool for buildings. The tool was used to intercompare the case studies put forward by the participating countries on an equal footing.
