Objectives

  • To maintain overall co-ordination of the project and ensure that progress remains on schedule and that milestones and deliverables are achieved.
  • To act as lead partner in WP (workpackage) 4 to understand high variability in using EN319 and develop a reliable internal bond test method; in WP 6 to determine the ageing effects on the relative creep and duration of load tests of CBPB; in WP 9 to determine the creep and duration of load factors under shear loads for possible inclusion in EC5.
  • To undertake part of the selection of test pieces for creep and duration of load tests (WP 2); the development of edgewise bending of wood based panels (WP 5); testing on creep and duration of loads under concentrated loads (WP 7; WP11) and creep and duration of load tests of PMDI (WP8).

Workplan

Co-ordination

General supervision of the total programme of work through regular meetings and other communication. Liaison with the EU and project partners through a series of 6 monthly meetings and annual progress reports. Organisation and submission of the final report. Total 8 person months.

 

Workpackage 2: Selection of test pieces for creep and duration of load

To assist in identifying the optimum method and producing calibration data for determining the test loads for creep and duration of load tests (WP2.1) and carry out the creep verification tests (WP2.2). 5 person months will be required to carry out NDT tests on 560 test pieces and 40 creep tests.

 

Workpackage 4: Development of reliable internal bond test method

To investigate thoroughly the effects of all parameters on IB strength of wood based products using the EN319 (WP4.1). To liaise with other partners involved and produce a report summarising the results. 4 person months will be input into this sub-WP to carry out 188 tests. To carry out alternative tests-Minnesota shear (WP4.2). Total 2 person months will be required to conduct 50 tests.

 

Workpackage 5: Edgewise bending performance of wood based panels

To assist in design studies of large scale edge loaded test methods for determination of strength and stiffness properties of wood based products (WP5.1). To carry out design studies for the potential use in edge load creep test of wood based products and conduct indicative creep tests (WP5.2). Total 3 person months.

 

Workpackage 6: Ageing effects on the properties of CBPB

To establish the relationship between strength and ageing time and determine tzero for the creep and duration of load tests of CBPB. 7 person months to carry out 170 tests and produce the final WP report summarising the results and recommendations to appropriate CEN TC112 committee.

 

Workpackage 7: Dynamic creep performance under concentrated loads

In association with Partners 2 and 3, to carry out design studies and tests on dynamic creep of OSB, PB and PW under concentrated loads. 3 person months will be used to test 6 creep samples for duration of 6 months.

 

Workpackage 8: Creep and duration of load behaviour of PMDI

8 person months will be provided to carry out creep and duration of load tests of new binder (PMDI) bonded PB and OSB, to calculate the best estimate of kmod and kdef for possible inclusion in EC5. Total 70 test pieces will be loaded with a duration between several hours and 6 months.

 

Workpackage 9: creep and duration of load behaviour under shear loads

To construct new test rig and conduct tests on both panel and planar shear creep and duration of load tests, to calculate the best estimate of kmod and kdel for possible inclusion in EC5. To liaise with TRADA and DTI involved and produce a report summarising the results. Total 6 person months.

 

Workpackage 11: creep and duration of load behaviour under concentrated loads

In association with TRADA and DTI, to carry out 40 tests on creep and duration of load of wood based products under concentrated loads, to calculate the best estimate of kmod and kdel. Total 5 person months.

Objectives

  • To act as lead partner in WP 2 to determine the optimum method of determining the test load for creep and duration of load tests for a revised version of ENV1156; in WP 7 to develop both static and dynamic concentrated load creep tests and determine creep behaviour under concentrated load.
  • To undertake part of sampling and cutting of test materials (WP1); evaluation of plywood glue bond performance using EN314 (WP3); development of reliable internal bond test method (WP4); the development of edgewise bending of wood based panels (WP 5); testing on creep and duration of loads under shear loads (WP 9); integration of test methodology developed and results (WP12).

Workplan

Workpackage 1: Material selection and sampling

In association with WKI, select boards, sample and distribute all test pieces to other partners as necessary. Total 2 person months.

 

Workpackage 2: Methods for selection of test pieces for creep and duration of load

To identify the optimum method and produce calibration data for determining the test loads for creep and duration of load tests. To assist in the creep verification tests. 6 person months will be used to carry out NDT tests on 1120 test pieces.

 

Workpackage 3: Evaluation of plywood glue bond performance (EN314)

To carry out tests and evaluate glue bond performance using EN314. 2 person months will be required to conduct 180 plywood glue bond tests.

To assist in investigating the effects of all parameters on the internal bond of wood based products using the EN319. 4 person months to carry out 94 tests.

 

Workpackage 5: Edgewise bending performance

To assist in design studies of large scale test methods for determination of short-term strength and stiffness properties of edge loaded wood based panel products and carry out short and long term performance tests. Total 3 person months.

 

Workpackage 7: Dynamic creep performance under concentrated loads

To assist in t&g profile designs, and carry out tests to establish data base for mechanical performance under concentrated loads. 6 person months for 84 tests.

 

Workpackage 11: creep and duration of load behaviour under concentrated loads

To carry out 50 tests on creep and duration of load of wood based products under concentrated loads and calculate the best estimate of kmod and kdel. To produce the final report. Total 6 person months.

 

Workpackage 12: Integration of test methodology and results

In association with DTI, integrate the interrelationships in the light of test work carried out in workpackages 2 to 11. To evaluate impact on relevant standards and EC5 and make recommendations for revision.

Objectives

  • To act as lead partner in WP 5 to develop large scale test method for determination of short and long term performance of edge loaded wood based products; in WP 10 to develop the optimum t&g profile for both industry and the CEN TC112 structural performance standards for floor and roof decking; in WP 12 to integrate test method and results obtained from WP 2 to WP10.

  • To undertake part of the development of reliable internal bond test method (WP4); the development of edgewise bending of wood based panels (WP 5.1); the evaluation of ageing effect on the performance of CBPB (WP 6).
