Supporting BS EN ISO 9001:2000

BS EN ISO 9001:200011, requires that the design and development process of any product be planned, reviewed, verified, validated and any changes to the process controlled. This is achieved through the effective maintenance of records, checking of inputs and outputs, assignment of responsibilities and clear communication. Service life assessment can support achieving or maintaining compliance with this Standard by providing a documented quality and review procedures that ensure the design product meets the client's requirements.

ISO 9001: 2000 Clause Overview of Requirements Role of BRE-SLAM
7.3.1 Planning
  • Determine the design and development stages
  • Determine the review, verification and validation that are appropriate
  • BRE-SLAM is flexible for the different design stages of various procurement processes and can be used iteratively by the designer.
7.3.2 Inputs

Inputs shall include:

  • Functional and performance requirements
  • The Assessment of the Client Brief enables the designers to ensure that the relevant information is available.
  • The Assessments of the Conceptual and Detailed Designs provide an opportunity to update the Client Brief.
7.3.3 Outputs

Outputs shall:

  • Meet the input requirements
  • Provide information for purchasing, production and servicing
  • Contain reference and product acceptance criteria
  • Specify the product characteristics essential for proper use
  • The Assessments of Conceptual and Detailed Designs ensure the Client Brief requirements are met, and identify those areas where care is necessary to ensure these requirements are met.
  • These Design Assessments and that of the Life-care Plan ensure information relevant to support purchasing, production, servicing and proper use is identified.
7.3.4 Review
  • To evaluate the designs ability to meet requirements
  • To identify any problems and propose actions
  • Assessment of the Detailed Design against the Client Brief.
  • The BRE-SLAM Reports have been developed to report the required actions in the event of an Assessment failure.
7.3.5 Verification
  • To ensure the design outputs meet the requirements of the inputs
  • Assessment of the Detailed Design against the Client Brief.
7.3.6 Validation
  • To ensure the resulting product will meet the requirements of use.
  • Assessment of the Detailed Design against the Client Brief.
7.3.7 Control of changes
  • Identify design changes and maintain records
  • The BRE-SLAM Reports provide actions to complete following an Assessment failure. The completion of these actions can be recorded for compliance.
